Did you know that throwing garters is one of the oldest wedding traditions which is still alive (just) today?
In early Medieval times it was customary for friends, relatives and guests to escort the newlyweds to their marriage bed. The purpose was to safely see the married couple ensconced in their wedding bed and once this had been achieved they left the newly weds to their own company. During this ‘ceremony’ the brides wedding garter would be removed to be used in a ‘garter tossing’ game!
